Why Your Cleanser Might Be the Most Important Step in Your Routine

Cleansing is one of those skincare steps people tend to underestimate.

We spend a lot of time talking about serums, moisturisers, eye concentrates and SPF, but the truth is, everything starts with how you cleanse. Get that step wrong, and the rest of your routine has to work harder than it should.
A good cleanser should not leave your skin feeling tight, squeaky, stripped or uncomfortable. That very “clean” feeling some people chase is often a sign that the skin has been disrupted rather than cared for. The best cleanse is effective, but gentle. Fresh, but not harsh. Thorough, but never aggressive. In other words, your cleanser should reset the skin, not punish it.

What does a cleanser actually need to do?
At its simplest, a cleanser removes the things you do not want sitting on your skin: daily impurities, excess oil, SPF, makeup residue and environmental build up. But a good daily cleanser should do this while respecting the skin barrier. That matters because the skin barrier helps keep moisture in and external irritants out. When it is compromised, skin can feel dry, sensitive, tight or unsettled.
This is why we believe cleansing should be treated as part of the ritual, not as a quick throwaway step.
Cleansing and the rest of your routine
Think of cleansing as the opening step. When skin is properly cleansed, the rest of your products can be applied more comfortably and evenly. Your serum has a better canvas. Your moisturiser sits more beautifully. Your SPF becomes the final layer of a routine that has been properly prepared.
That is why our Ritual begins with cleansing and ends with protection. These are the steps you rely on every day. Cleanse. Then care. Then protect. Simple, but it makes sense.

What to look for in a daily cleanser
For everyday use, you would look for a cleanser that is gentle, effective and comfortable enough to return to daily.
There are plenty of cleansers on the market that look very impressive on TikTok. You know the ones: heavy foam, dramatic makeup removal, instant “squeaky clean” results and the satisfying feeling that every trace of the day has been stripped away. The problem is, that dramatic cleanse can sometimes come at a cost. Overly astringent cleansers may cut through makeup, SPF and daily build up very quickly, but they can also leave the skin feeling tight, dry or unsettled. That is usually a sign that the skin has been stripped rather than properly cared for. A good daily cleanser should remove what you do not want on the skin, without disrupting what your skin still needs.
For everyday use, look for a cleanser that is:
Gentle enough for regular use
Suitable for all skin types
Effective at removing daily impurities
Non stripping
Comfortable on the skin
Designed to work with the rest of your routine
Texture matters too. A cleanser should feel pleasant to use. If a product is going to become part of your daily ritual, it should not feel harsh, drying or like a chore.

Ingredients that support a considered cleanse
A thoughtful cleanser is not only about what it removes. It is also about what it leaves behind.
After cleansing, skin should feel fresh, soft and comfortable, not tight or overly polished. That comes down to the overall formulation, but certain ingredients can help create a more balanced cleanse.
Sea Kelp is rich in minerals and works beautifully in skincare designed to support hydration and skin comfort. It brings that soft, replenished feeling that stops cleansing from feeling too severe.
Vitamin E is a well known antioxidant, often used to help condition and protect the skin. In a cleanser, it adds a sense of care to a step that can sometimes be treated too harshly.
Conditioning emollients, including plant-derived oils or lightweight fatty acid ingredients, help soften the skin and reduce that dry, tight feeling some cleansers can leave behind.
Witch Hazel is often associated with purifying the skin, but the key is how it is used. In a delicate formula, it can help refine and refresh without making the cleanse feel aggressive.
Humectants, such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, help attract and hold water in the skin, supporting a softer, more comfortable feeling after cleansing.
The best cleanser should leave your skin feeling ready for what comes next: serum, moisturiser, SPF, or simply a bare face that feels clean and comfortable. That, really, is the point of a daily cleanser.

How to cleanse without overdoing it
A good cleanse should feel thorough, but never harsh. Start with warm water and a small amount of cleanser, massaging gently over the skin in slow, circular movements. Take your time around areas where SPF, makeup and daily build up tend to sit, such as the nose, chin and hairline.
To remove, rinse with warm water or use a warm, damp Spa Cleansing Cloth. The cloth should glide over the skin, helping to lift away cleanser and impurities without the need for pressure. Think soft sweeping movements, not scrubbing.
Once cleansed, pat the skin dry and follow with your serum while the skin is still slightly damp. The aim is skin that feels fresh, clean and comfortable. If your face feels tight afterwards, your cleanse may be too harsh, or your technique may be doing more than it needs to.

Morning, evening, or both?
For most people, cleansing once in the evening is the non-negotiable step. By the end of the day, your skin has collected SPF, makeup, oil, sweat and environmental build up. Leaving that sitting on the skin overnight is not ideal, especially if you are applying serums or moisturiser afterwards.
Evening cleansing gives the skin a fresh, comfortable base for the rest of your routine.
Morning cleansing is a little more personal.
Some skin types, particularly oilier or blemish-prone skin, often benefit from a gentle morning cleanse to remove overnight oil and residue. Dermatologists commonly advise washing the face twice daily, and after sweating, but also note that drier or more sensitive skin may need a softer approach.
So the simplest guide is this:
If your skin feels oily, congested or you have used richer night products, cleanse gently in the morning. If your skin feels dry, delicate or easily unsettled, a splash of lukewarm water may be enough before applying your morning skincare.
The important thing is not to over-cleanse. Too much washing, or using a cleanser that is too harsh, can leave the skin feeling tight, dry or irritated. That is why a gentle daily cleanser matters: it gives you the option to cleanse morning and evening without making the skin feel stripped. In the evening, cleanse properly. In the morning, listen to your skin. That is usually the best balance.

The quiet power of consistency
Skincare does not need to be dramatic to be effective. In fact, the products that often make the greatest difference are the ones you use every day, quietly and consistently.
A cleanser that lifts away the day without leaving skin tight.
A serum that supports hydration and texture.
A moisturiser that nourishes and comforts.
An SPF that protects without feeling like a chore.
That is the thinking behind our Daily Essentials: not more steps, but better ones. The everyday products that form the foundation of your routine and help everything else work at its optimum.
A considered cleanse is where that begins. Done gently, it leaves skin fresh, soft and ready for what follows. All without stripping, scrubbing or disrupting the skin.
