What Should a Cleanser Actually Do?

If TikTok is to be believed, your cleanser should be able to de age you, strip paint, dissolve a full face of makeup in three seconds and explode every blackhead within a five mile radius. Very dramatic for sure. Very watchable and stops you scrolling for 10 seconds, but not always very helpful.

Cleansing is one of the simplest steps in a skincare routine, but it has become oddly overcomplicated. There are foams, gels, creams, oils, acids, actives, double cleanses, triple cleanses and routines that seem to require the commitment of a small military operation. But at its heart, a good cleanser has a simple job. It should clean the skin effectively, without leaving it feeling tight, dry or uncomfortable. That might not sound as exciting as a viral “watch this remove everything” video, but for everyday skin, it matters.

Cleanser is not supposed to do everything

A cleanser is not a serum. It is not a moisturiser. It is not an overnight resurfacing treatment.

It is not supposed to transform your face in one wash while trending/dramatic music plays in the background. A cleanser is there to remove what you do not want sitting on the skin: SPF, makeup, oil, sweat, pollution, daily build up and general residue from the day. That is already a useful job.

The problem comes when cleansers are expected to do too much. If a formula feels very harsh, very stripping or leaves the skin feeling squeaky clean in that almost shiny, tight way, it may be more aggressive than your skin needs every day. Clean should feel fresh. It should not feel like your face has been power washed.

The “squeaky clean” myth

For years, many of us were taught that tight skin meant clean skin. That freshly scrubbed, almost stretched feeling became associated with a proper cleanse. The trouble is, skin that feels tight after cleansing is often skin that has been left too dry or unsettled. A good cleanser should remove impurities while still leaving the skin feeling comfortable. Soft, not stripped. Fresh, not fragile.

Clean, but not squeaky in the bathroom tile sense.

This is especially important if you are using skincare afterwards. Your serum, eye product and moisturiser should be going onto skin that feels calm and comfortable, not skin that is already annoyed with you.

When your moisturiser is doing too much of the work

We have seen this with customers more than once. A few customers were using our Age Defying Daily Moisturiser very regularly, getting through it faster than expected. When we spoke to them, they told us they loved the crème because it helped their skin feel calm and comfortable again after cleansing. Which, of course, is lovely to hear. But it also raised an interesting point.

In some cases, the moisturiser was not just being used to nourish the skin. It was being used to make up for a cleanse that was leaving the skin feeling too tight, too dry or too unsettled in the first place.

A good moisturiser should absolutely leave skin feeling comforted and hydrated. But it should not have to rescue your face every single time you cleanse it. If your skin feels like it urgently needs a rich crème immediately after cleansing, your cleanser may be doing more than your skin needs.

The better balance is simple: cleanse gently, then moisturise to support the skin, not to apologise for what your cleanser just did.

More foam does not always mean a better cleanse

Foam can feel satisfying. There is something very convincing about a product that lathers dramatically. It offers visual and tactile proof that the product is "doing something".

But more foam does not automatically mean better cleansing. Some people love a foaming cleanser and get on beautifully with it. Others find high foam formulas leave their skin feeling dry, tight or unbalanced. The point is not that foam is bad. The point is that foam is not proof.

A cleanser does not need to look dramatic to be effective. Some of the most comfortable daily cleansers are much quieter in texture. They do their job without making a big performance of it.

What should you look for in a daily cleanser?

A daily cleanser should be easy to return to. That sounds almost too simple, but it is important. If your cleanser feels harsh, drying or unpleasant, you are less likely to use it consistently. If it leaves your skin feeling fresh and comfortable, it becomes a step you do without thinking.

A good daily cleanser should:

  • Remove daily build up effectively

  • Lift away SPF and light makeup

  • Leave skin feeling fresh and comfortable

  • Avoid that tight, stripped feeling

  • Work well as part of a morning or evening routine

  • Prepare the skin for the next steps

It should not feel like an event.

It should feel like a reliable reset.

Ingredients can help, but cleanser still needs to be gentle

Cleansers are rinse off products, so it is worth being realistic. They are not usually where you need the highest concentration of active ingredients. That said, the ingredients still matter. A good cleanser can include thoughtful ingredients that help the formula feel more refined, comfortable and skin friendly.

Humectants can help the skin feel softer and more comfortable.

Conditioning ingredients can help reduce the dry feeling some cleansers leave behind.

Antioxidants, such as Vitamin E, can bring a more caring feel to the formula.

Botanical or marine ingredients, such as Sea Kelp, can support a softer, more nurturing cleanse.

Gentle purifying ingredients, when used carefully, can help the skin feel fresh without making the formula feel aggressive.

The aim is balance. A cleanser should cleanse properly, but it should also respect the fact that you have to live with your face afterwards.

Morning cleanse, evening cleanse, or both?

There is no single answer that works for everyone. An evening cleanse is usually the most useful one. By the end of the day, your skin has collected SPF, makeup, oil, sweat and general build up. Removing that before bed makes sense.

Morning cleansing is more personal. If your skin feels oily when you wake up, or you have used richer products overnight, a gentle morning cleanse can feel lovely. If your skin feels dry or delicate, you may prefer a splash of lukewarm water in the morning and a proper cleanse in the evening.

The best guide is how your skin feels afterwards. If it feels fresh, soft and comfortable, you are probably in a good place. If it feels tight, hot, dry or irritated, your cleanser or your technique may be doing too much.

Your technique matters too

Even a gentle cleanser can feel less gentle if you use it aggressively. You do not need boiling hot water. You do not need to scrub. You do not need to attack your face like it owes you money.

Warm water is enough. Massage the cleanser gently over the skin using light circular movements. Take a little extra time around areas where SPF, makeup and daily build up tend to sit, such as the nose, chin, hairline and jaw. If you use a cleansing cloth, keep it soft, warm and damp. Use gentle sweeping movements rather than rubbing. The aim is clean skin, not a personal best in exfoliation.
